St. Charles East coach Jennie Kull was not sure how her team would respond following Saturday’s loss to Joliet Catholic at the Mizuno Cup tournament.

She need not have worried.

Senior middle Haley Streich (nine kills) did all her damage early and junior Jacqui Seidel (11 kills) did all of her work late as the No. 5 Saints overwhelmed Downers Grove South 25-22, 25-18 Monday in St. Charles.

Laura Homann added 27 assists and junior Caroline Niski had six kills and nine digs for St. Charles (26-2).

“We played well tonight,” Kull said. “You never know with a young team (two freshmen, two juniors) right after a tournament like that.

“But Laura (setter Homann) did a fantastic job running the offense, Haley was aggressive and it was nice to see Jacqui attacking and being successful."

Streich was a favorite target of Homann’s early in both games, collecting four kills in Game 1 and five in Game 2 to power St. Charles East to a pair of 6-1 leads. Downers South (18-7) eventually closed to within 22-20 in Game 1, but never recovered in Game 2.

“Laura is really good at spreading the offense around,” Streich said. “People were letting her know what shots were open and it just worked out tonight. We wanted to come out and defend our home court, and we had people step up.”

Freshman Meghan Niski added two kills and nine digs for St. Charles.

Downers Grove South, the top seed at the Maine West Pumpkinfest this weekend, was led by Jessica McNellis (seven kills, two blocks), Marielle Ostermeyer (seven kills, eight assists) and Colleen Dobry (seven assists).
