ELGIN -- Coming off a long homecoming weekend and facing Suburban Catholic Conference bottom-feeder Aurora Central Catholic, St. Edward found itself in a prototypical trap game on Monday.

However despite an obvious letdown, the Green Wave managed to escape with a 25-14, 25-16 win at home, its third win in-a-row.

The Wave (9-10, 6-2 SCC) overcame 22 unforced errors but also had a 19-8 kill advantage and recorded 10 aces.

"It's one of those tough games to coach," said St. Edward coach Jaime Walton. "It's a hard game for the girls to get up for and we just didn't play with a lot of emotion.

"But you're going to have games like this in a long season and you're just going to have to work your way through it."

Nothing seemed to come easy for St. Edward. The Wave were unable to string together more than four points at any time during the first game in large part to five missed serves and four missed kill attempts.

However, ACC (10-13, 1-7) fared no better and never strung together more than three points, while committing 12 unforced errors of their own.

"We had a lot of errors, especially early," said Walton. "Even in this type of game you want to set small goals for yourself throughout. So after a really sloppy start, we just tried to focus on reducing our errors."

The Wave never trailed in Game 2 but the Chargers did pull even at 13-13.

St. Edward finally pulled it together to go on a 12-3 run to close out the match. Kristen Haggenjos' kill put the Wave up for good 14-13. Haggenjos -- who finished with seven kills -- hammered another one down late in the run. The Wave also got a couple kills from Katie Yohn down the stretch.

"It was getting a little too close for comfort in that game," said Haggenjos. "We realized we had to step up and quit fooling around. We were finally able to take control of the match and finish pretty well.

"It was just one of those slow, dreary days after a long weekend and the whole match just seemed to move slow. But we know we have to get back into it at practice tomorrow."

Yohn had a team-high eight kills and added two blocks and seven assists. Margie Haggenjos had a team-high six digs for St. Edward and Rachel Varley added nine assists. Kristen Haggenjos finished with four aces.
