Huskies prevail at Plainfield North Invite

Before each match, a teammate draws a faux tattoo on the right shoulder of Naperville North’s Audrey Wilson. It doesn’t say “Mom.”

“It’s a unicorn,” Wilson said. “Sidney Sauter does it. She’s really good at it. She decided to do it before our first match. It’s good luck now, so we do it before every match.

“I think it intimidates the other team,” Wilson joked. “They see it and run.”

Whether it is good luck or not, the tattoo seems to be working. Wilson had 10 kills and Sauter added five kills and six digs as Naperville North (6-0) defeated Rosary 25-23, 25-16 to win the Plainfield North Invite Saturday.

Emily Cardwell added eight kills; Jordan Pappas had 22 assists; and Julie Chin added 14 digs for the Huskies, who trailed 23-21 in the first game before scoring 22 of the next 32 points to win Game 1 and take an 18-10 lead in Game 2.

It was the second straight year Naperville North won the tournament, but this is a different looking team without Colleen Ward and Christine Wu.

“We have other good players,” Wilson said. “Other people are stepping up. I think we definitely proved ourselves this weekend.”

Kelsey Bowler added seven digs for Naperville North, which frustrated Rosary by digging ball after ball.

“Their defense won that match, and our’s kind of fell apart,” said Rosary coach Lisa Kasper

All-tournament selection Kelly Hogan led Rosary (5-1) with five kills and Lindsey Weber added four kills and a block.

Joliet (5-2) took third, defeating St. Charles North 25-15, 25-14 behind all-tournament choice Vivan Pritz.
