Trevians prevail with a perfect combination

New Trier showed in the first part of the season it could possess the ball. Later, the Trevians displayed that they could attack.

But it wasn’t until a week and a half ago that they realized they weren’t putting the two components together. Either they were attacking or they were possessing.

Now, finally, New Trier is combining it all, and the results have been scary. For the third consecutive playoff game, the Trevians’ offense was unstoppable as they defeated Glenbrook North 3-0 in the Niles North Sectional semifinal on Tuesday.

In three playoff games, the Trevians (19-4-2) have scored 17 goals.

“We played great,” New Trier coach Jim Burnside said. “I was impressed that they played so well against a good, athletic team. We were putting six, seven, eight passes together and moving forward.”

The Trevians began building their lead midway through the first half. Off a corner kick by Jessie Wall in the 23rd minute, Annemarie Heinrich headed the ball to the near post. Sophomore Lynn Froetscher was there to receive it, slid with her left foot at the ball and scored in the left corner of the net.

New Trier kept the pressure on in the second half and was rewarded with goals by Amber Fry and Dani Fraelic.

“It’s been a lot of fun the last few games now that we figured out what’s going on,” Froetscher said. “We have a lot of confidence now.”

The Spartans (15-6-1) wore orange No. 16 stickers in honor of Melissa Wilson, who missed the game after having surgery following an injury in the regional championship.
