Kathryn Korff's header with 1:16 remaining in the first half was all third-seeded Hersey needed to win its first regional title in a 1-0 victory over Lake Zurich Friday night at the Class AA Lake Zurich Regional.

Korff used her 5-foot-10 height to finish off Kristen Gierman's corner kick as the Huskies (17-2-4) stretched their unbeaten streak to 15 games and earned their 15th shutout, including three in a row.

After the game, Lake Zurich coach Peter Ternes announced his resignation after nine years with the Bears. Lake Zurich's run of six consecutive regional titles ended.

The 10th-seeded Bears (5-8-9) lost leading scorer Mackenzie Ryan to an injury early in the season while Ternes won the fewest games in his tenure with a starting lineup that featured three seniors.

Under Ternes, Lake Zurich finished second in 2003 and placed third in 2002 and 2004. He resigned to spend more time with his family.

"This ends my career I believe," said Ternes, who handed in his resignation Thursday. "It hit me talking to the girls. I got choked up. Technically, I'm done. I'm not a coach anymore."

Hersey advanced to play seventh-seeded Palatine (8-9-5), a 1-0 winner over second-seeded Lake Forest, in the Palatine Sectional semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The two teams tied 2-2 on April 21.
