CLASS 2A REGIONALS
Sparked by a second-half surge, seventh-seeded Marian Catholic stunned host Lincoln-Way Central 2-1 in New Lenox.
Lincoln-Way Central (12-8-3) opened the scoring when striker Allison Doyle accepted a pass from Julie Tromp and buried a crisp shot into the back of the net. It was Doyle's team-leading 18th goal of the season, coming with 5:51 remaining in the opening half.
The Spartans knotted the match with 28:10 remaining in the second half. Meghan Rockrohr took Kasey Cartwright's pass and flicked the ball over the head of Knights goalkeeper Jamie Panfil. Panfil had four saves in the game.
"We came in with the mentality of trying to win every ball today," Rockrohr said. "We knew if we did that we could beat them."
On the second goal, Cartwright broke loose at midfield and weaved her way through several Lincoln-Way Central defenders to pop in a left-footed shot from about 15 yards out with 25:21 left.
"I really just saw a gap there and took a shot," said Cartwright, who is also the Spartans' team captain and leading scorer with 20 goals on the season. "We're always coached if you have a shot then take it, so that's what I tried to do."
"To be honest, I just wanted us to stay close early on," said Marian Catholic coach Nasser Shahtaji said. "I felt if we could do that, we would build our confidence up and then anything could happen."
Marian Catholic (14-6) will face Lincoln-Way East, a 4-0 winner over Joliet Township in the championship game of the Lincoln-Way East Regional, at 5 p.m. Monday in a Lincoln-Way Central Sectional semifinal.
Downers South 6, Leyden 0: Keri Kujawa and Danielle Janowiak had two goals each for Downers South (17-6) at the Downers South Regional.
Downers North 3, Fenwick 1: At the Riverside-Brookfield Regional, Downers North was paced by goals from Jess Bollow, Emily Raiman and Brianna Magill.
Geneva 1, Benet 0: At the Rosary Regional, Geneva's goal at the 21:14 minute of the second half from Bri Santacaterina proved to be the difference.
Hersey 1, Lake Zurich 0: At the Lake Zurich Regional, Kathryn Korff's goal lifted Hersey (17-2-4). Kristen Gierman added an assist and Julia Fredian posted five saves for the shut out.
Kelly 2, Oak Lawn 1: Bianca Medina and Lizbeth Soto each scored a goal for Kelly (7-6-3) in their win at the De La Salle Regional.
Lake Park 2, Hoffman Estates 1: At the Lake Park Regional, Julia Nelson scores two goals for the host Lancers, including the game-winner in the first overtime period. Brittany Davies assisted on both Lake Park goals. Leah Rednes scored the lone Hoffman Estates goal in the first half.
Lemont 8, Shepard 0: Shelly Hadlock and Tammy Contorno both scored twice as regional host Lemont (19-4) downed Shepard.
Libertyville 2, Grayslake Central 0: Regional host Libertyville used goals from Haley Pike and Felicia Gonzalez in beating Grayslake Central.
Lincoln-Way East 4, Joliet 0: Regional host Lincoln-Way East was paced by Casey Meehan, who scored a goal and two assists, while Ali Breakey recorded her fifth shutout.
Lyons 2, Nazareth 0: Lyons junior Jen Diorio scored in the 53rd minute and senior Ali Todhunter scored two minutes later to down regional host Nazareth.
Mother McAuley 5, Queen of Peace 0: Regional host Mother McAuley (7-10-2) was led by Carolyn Shotas hat trick.
Mundelein 2, Lakes 1: Mundelein (16-2-4) was paced by goals from Courtney Bestler and Kim Carroll at the Lakes Regional.
Naperville Central 1, Naperville North 0: Casey Short scored a first half goal for regional host Naperville Central, while goaltender Krissy Many anchored the Redhawk defense by recorded a shutout.
Neuqua Valley 2, Batavia 1: Alex Isdell and Ashley Marapode scored goals for regional host Neuqua Valley. Batavia's goal came from Haliegh Erwin.
New Trier 5, Deerfield 0: At the Amundsen Regional, New Trier received goals from Alicia Shapiro, Jessie Wall, Alicia Johnson, Dani Fraelick and Haley Rosen. Amber Fry added three assists, while Sami O'Dwyer amd Becky Greenberg each recorded an assists.
New Trier advances to the Niles North Sectional on Tuesday.
Sandburg 8, Bolingbrook 2: Allie Osoba netted four goals in leading Sandburg (14-6-1) to the Bolingbrook Regional crown. Amy Frazzini, Brittany Rowe, Leah Manning and Colleen McMahon also scored for the Eagles.
U-High 8, Bogan 0: At the U-High Regional, U-High was led by Ciara Zagaja's two goals and one assist. Sasha Karapetrova added a goal and an assist for U-High, who also received goals from Luck O’Keefe, Fraser Brown, Amelia Acosta, Amy Solomon and Dorian Williams.
Waubonsie Valley 6, Oswego 0: Claire Hanold's shutout paved the way for Waubonsie Valley at the Plainfield North Regional.
Wheaton North 2, West Chicago 0: At the West Chicago Regional, Wheaton North received tallies from Paige Fowler and Jaime Oremiler.
