Tie with LWC snaps Waubonsie streak

Sometimes a tie doesn't feel like a tie at all. Sometimes it feels all too much like a loss.

Just like it was Monday for Waubonsie Valley against Lincoln-Way Central.

The visiting Warriors saw their 29-game winning streak snapped after allowing a goal in the 77th minute of a 2-2 tie against the Knights in a nonconference match at Jonas R. Lashmet Field.

While the Knights celebrated, the Warriors (2-0-1) quickly packed up and boarded their bus after seeing the fourth-longest winning streak in state history come to a surprising end.

Waubonsie failed to win for the first time since a scoreless tie with Naperville North on April 3, 2007.

"I hope it's a lesson learned," Waubonsie coach Julie Bergstrom said. "Lincoln-Way never gave up. They seemed to want it more than we did."

That their unbeaten streak remained intact at 34 games (32-0-2) probably was of little consolation to the Warriors, who played without sophomore Vanessa DiBernardo and freshman Megan Green. The two are in Germany for an Olympic Developmental Program event.

Waubonsie fell behind 1-0 in the opening minute before rallying for a 2-1 halftime lead. But the Warriors had few chances in the second half, leaving them susceptible to the tying goal by Allison Doyle, who scored twice for the Knights (2-0-1).

"We got two good goals and then after that we didn't really play to score, which we should be doing," said Bri Rodriguez, whose first goal of the season tied it 1. "We seemed fired up at halftime. We just need to have more of an offensive mentality, especially with Vanessa gone. We've got to work to get those third and fourth goals and not be satisfied with two."

Doyle gave the Knights a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game. Doyle, who had 25 goals as a junior, stole the ball from Rachel Bostick about 30 yards from the goal and hit a shot from 20 yards out to beat a diving Claire Hanold.

It marked the first time the Warriors have allowed goals in consecutive regular-season games since April 4 and 6, 2006.

Rodriguez tied it in the 24th minute. She had a chance to give the Warriors a lead four minutes later, but her penalty kick sailed wide left of goalie Jamie Panfil. Rodriguez also hit the post from 30 yards out in the 73rd minute.

Ali Stahlke put the Warriors ahead in the 39th minute with her first goal of the season.

The score stayed that way until the 77th minute, when Doyle scored for the second time in the game, giving the Knights a tie.

And for them it felt like a win.

"We were jumping up like it was the World Cup," Knights coach Dan Radz said of the coaching staff's reaction. "It was good for us."
