Waubonsie Valley star Bri Rodriguez has been suspended from the girls soccer team for violating the District 204 athletic code of conduct, her father confirmed Thursday night.
Rodriguez was assessed a four-game suspension, which is customary within the school district for first-time offenses. Rodriguez has already missed Waubonsie’s first two games and will be held out of the Warriors' games against South Elgin on Tuesday and at Oswego on April 11.
Jim Rodriguez said it was unlikely she would have played in those games regardless of the suspension because she is still recovering from a torn ligament in her left knee suffered last spring.
The first game she is eligible for is the Warriors’ home opener, April 13 against Lincoln-Way Central.
Rodriguez said Bri was at a party in Naperville last summer that was broken up by police. She was cited for underage drinking.
“She made the decision to go do something she knew she shouldn’t have done, and she got caught,” Jim Rodriguez said.
The news comes a day after the Warriors saw their 59-game unbeaten streak snapped in a 1-0 loss to Naperville Central. The two-time defending state champion Warriors opened the season ranked No. 1 in two national polls.
Bri Rodriguez, a West Virginia signee, has received many individual honors in her first three seasons with the Warriors. She is the national coaches’ association player of the year and Gatorade’s player of the year in Illinois for 2008.
She has twice been named The Sun Player of the Year, and is a three-time all-state player.
