Sometimes an early decision can turn into a hasty one.
Hillcrest sophomore Uniquah Hampton is sure that won’t be the case regarding her decision to verbally commit to DePaul University.
"I like the way Doug Bruno coaches his team like a family," she said. "I feel very comfortable going there."
Hampton, who has been on the Hillcrest varsity since her freshman year, averaged 15 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 4.l steals and one blocked shot per game for the Hawks during the 2007-08 season.
"DePaul has always been her dream school," Hawks coach John Maniatis said. "She’s wanted to go there since she was a little kid.
"Uniquah has been attending their camps, and was really hoping to have an opportunity to get a scholarship. Fortunately, she will be able to have that chance at the place she really wants to play."
During her junior season, Hampton and sophomore-to-be Juanita Robinson are expected to be the leaders on a Hillcrest team that figures to be one of the front-runners in Class 3A.
"One of the reasons I’m glad to get this [commitment] out of the way early is that now I can totally concentrate on playing basketball for Hillcrest," Hampton said. "I think we can go downstate the next couple of years."
