The relief and elation of Elgin's first victory of the season poured out in a jubilant locker room Saturday.
"After we shook hands we went into the locker room and just started screaming," said Maroons senior Giselle Bruskewitz. "With the tradition of Elgin High, we didn't want to be the ones who didn't win a game."
The Maroons don't have to worry about that anymore following a 39-25 Upstate Eight Conference victory over visiting East Aurora.
Bruskewitz and Kiersten Swartz each scored 10 points and Caris Alan added nine for the Maroons.
"It was about time," said Bruskewitz. "We kind of came out and stuck to what each of us was supposed to be doing."
Elgin (1-21, 1-7) shot out to a 29-6 halftime lead and coasted against the Tomcats (5-18, 1-6). The Maroons also got six points from Brandi Hernandez.
"We played a great, great first half," said Maroons coach Angie Hudson. "Everything we threw up was going in. And we were long overdue for that."
Added Bruskewitz: "I've always had hope, but it was getting very, very frustrating. But we were all really excited after it was over."
