Trinity senior center Amanda Macchione was not having a good few weeks. Her shot was off and she wasn’t feeling confident.
But all that changed Saturday, when Macchione scored a game-high 25 points to lead the No. 22 Blazers past visiting Walther Lutheran 75-48 in River Forest.
“I was shocked today, because I hit a rough spot there for a couple weeks,” Macchione said. “My team was giving me the ball and everyone had to step up with Monica [Albano] hurt. I wasn’t doing anything extra special. I had just been thinking about it too much.”
Trinity was playing without junior guard Monica Albano, who sprained her right ankle Wednesday. Trinity coach Ed Stritzel said Albano was getting out of a car and slipped on some ice. Albano also sat out Thursday’s game against Benet, a 34-19 Trinity victory.
The Blazers (16-4) led 36-24 at halftime, ending the second quarter on an 11-0 run. Trinity led 25-22 when the run started early in the second quarter, as Macchione sparked the spurt when she scored seven consecutive points. When the run was over, Trinity had a 36-22 lead and Macchione had contributed nine points.
Walther guard and Western Michigan recruit Jazzmyn Harvey went down with 7:33 to play in the fourth quarter with an apparent injury to her right knee.
Shanelle Wright led Walther (15-4) with 12 points.
