Marian Catholic guard Kaila Turner wanted to get fouled. In the second quarter, the 5-7 junior wanted to pick up a charging foul against visiting Trinity but all she got was a headache.
Turner got slammed onto the court and left the game for about a minute, only to return and rack up a game-high 23 points to lead the No. 4 Spartans to a 68-53 win over Trinity Saturday afternoon in Chicago Heights.
“I tried to take a charge, but I don’t think the girl [from Trinity] saw me coming and I banged the back of my head into the court,” Turner said. “I had a little headache, but I wanted [to get back in] and help my team get a big win.”
And it was. Marian stayed undefeated and improved to 10-0 and No. 10 Trinity’s winning streak ended at 13.
“They’re a good team, but we wanted to come out and show people what we could do,” Turner said.
Trinity seemed to dominate the first quarter and led 16-13. The Blazers increased its lead by seven midway through the second quarter. But Marian regrouped and led by two at halftime.
The third quarter saw the Spartans take full control. Turner ignited a 12-0 Marian run with a layup early in the quarter. By the time the run was over, Marian led 40-28.
Marian’s 6-2 junior center Mallory Eggert netted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
“At halftime we changed our defense to a 2-2-1 instead of being in man-to-man,” Eggert said. “It helped a lot and we put a lot of pressure on them and you could tell they got nervous and shaky. It was a fairly good day. I like getting rebounds more than points.”
Monica Albano led Trinity (13-1) with 17 points and Shakyia Vassar added 13 points.
