In a game governed by runs, Loyola orchestrated the one that mattered most.
The No. 8 Ramblers opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 burst that helped Loyola subdue No. 20 Von Steuben 41-36 Monday night in Wilmette.
Senior forward Meghan Holy scored six of her team-best 11 points in the fourth quarter. “We had the mentality that we were going to win the game then,” said Holy. “I think that was visible to anybody watching the game.”
With her team trailing 32-31 to start the fourth, Holy scored on a beautiful give-and-go with Katherine Wheeler. Holy followed with a sweet 15-footer from the left wing with 4:37 to play. Junior guard Audrey Gaughan (eight points) finished the run with a three-pointer from the left wing moments later.
Von Steuben senior guard Romeshia Taylor (nine points) ended the scoring drought with a drive down the left baseline though Holy responded immediately with a putback.
In posting their 15th consecutive win, the Ramblers (18-1) limited the Lady Panthers to just three second half baskets.
Senior wing La Terria Taylor scored 13 points for the Lady Panthers (13-7).
The game was also marked by a considerable absence. Von Steuben’s formidable center, 6-2 junior Shonte Clay, did not play. She was serving the first of a two-game suspension for breaking a team role, according to Von Steuben coach Sha Hopson.
“The difference in the game was [Clay] didn’t play,” said Hopson.
“We were very impatient offensively,” said Hopson. “We came down and had three straight turnovers in the fourth quarter.”
The back-and-forth game featured Loyola’s 10-0 run for a 23-17 advantage, a movement countered by Von Steuben’s 9-1 counter burst for a 26-24 lead at the break on sophomore Desire Irizarry’s three-pointer from the left baseline.
