Freshman Maggie Lyon’s 14 points and Lauren Mathy’s defense propelled host New Trier to a 46-41 upset win over No. 8 Marian Catholic Monday in Winnetka in both teams' season opener.
Unranked New Trier led by as much as 11 midway through the fourth quarter before Marian tried to mount a comeback. The Spartans outscored New Trier 11-5 the rest of the game, but never took the lead.
The Trevians outrebounded Marian 29-27.
“In practice we have been working on [rebounding] a lot,” said Mathy, who scored five points. “Our offensive rebounders crash really hard and they have some bigger people inside, so it just was a matter of getting low and pushing them out.”
The win also saw the return of New Trier coach Teri Rodgers, who took a year off last season.
“I thought our bench did a good job,” Rodgers said. “We just wanted to attack. We could use our quickness and we wanted to take advantage of that.”
Notre Dame recruit Kaila Turner led Marian with 13 points.
