Joe Wardynski, the defensive coordinator at WW South, has been named head football coach at Wheaton North.
He succeeds Matt Foster, whose contract wasn't renewed after the 2007 season.
Wardynski, working under head coach Ron Muhitch, engineered the defense that was instrumental in WW South's drive to the state championship in 2006, second place in 2007 and the semifinals in 2004 and 2005.
A close friend of Bears Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary, Wardynski reportedly would have gone to Baylor or the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL if Singletary had been hired as head coach.
Wheaton North finished 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the DuPage Valley Conference last fall, losing 41-0 to Morgan Park in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs.
