Simeon had things going all its way but had to hold on to get past Robeson 34-22 Monday in the Public League semifinals at Gately Stadium.
The Wolverines (9-3) built a 28-0 halftime lead behind quarterback Robert Gregory, who scored touchdowns on runs of 58 and 41 yards. He gained 149 yards on six carries.
Gregory also threw an 84-yard touchdown pass to DeVonta Elzy. Horatio Banks scored two touchdowns on rushes of 1 and 43 yards, finishing with 102 yards on 12 carries.
“It’s a good thing we have two halves of football,” said Simeon coach Jesse Chick, whose team plays Hubbard for the Public League title Saturday at 1 p.m. at Gately Stadium. “We had things going our way the entire first half and had just enough to hold on for the second half.”
The Raiders (8-4) scored three touchdowns in the second half on a 2-yard run by Jaron Crowell and two touchdown passes by Juwane Pipkins. They covered 10 yards to Deonta Stevens and 3 yards to Wayne Davis.
Pipkins finished 13-for-26 passing for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
“We didn’t play with any confidence in the first half,” Robeson coach Fabray Collins said. "When you come out tentative it’s an uphill battle all the way. We dug ourselves into too deep a hole to get out."
Middle linebacker John Tolliver anchored Simeon's defense with 12 tackles.
