Prospect quarterback Miles Osei has been called the prototype spread quarterback. He is equally effective throwing as he is running – under normal circumstances.
With a strong, gusty wind blowing out of the south, Osei and the Knights were limited to running the ball for most of the game Friday night
That wasn’t a hindrance, however, as Prospect ran out of the spread to defeat Carmel 33-13 in the opening round of the Class 7A playoffs in Mundelein.
"Miles competes like no kid that I’ve ever seen," Prospect coach Brent Pearlman said. "Certain kids are great football players and some kids are great kids. Miles is both and he’s a better kid."
Prospect scored touchdowns on four of its five first half possessions to take a 26-7 lead. Osei (31 carries, 217 yards, four TDs) and running back Peter Bonahoom (19 carries, 170 yards) were responsible for most of the yardage in the half.
The Knights (8-2) took the opening drive 83 yards and took a 6-0 lead when Bonahoom ran off right tackle for a 29-yard touchdown run. The junior running back was not touched on the play.
"Their pace was much quicker than ours," Carmel coach Andy Bitto said. "They had two guys running for big yardage. That was two nails in our coffin.’’
Osei made the score 13-0 with just under five minutes in the first quarter on a 9-yard run in which he cut back against the grain after running through a big hole. It was a scenario that was repeated often. Osei racked up 141 yards in the first half.
The offensive line of Matt Huene, Victor Rhee, Kyle Kapka, Mike Geweneger and Matt Boll drew praise from teammates and coaches for the job they did controlling the line of scrimmage.
Jordan Kos scored on a 44-yard, first-half run and Eric Stevenson scored from 22 yards out in the second half to account for the Corsairs touchdowns.
Carmel’s student body was wearing pink and the crowd released pink balloons before the game to honor the memory of Jennifer Berg, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 37 from breast cancer. Her husband Ben Berg is the offensive coordinator for the Corsairs and Jennifer was a teacher at Carmel.
