Johnsburg’s C.J. Fiedorowicz has that rare combination of size, skill and speed that all major college football programs covet. That is why the tight end is one of the most heavily recruited players in the country and arguably the best prospect in Illinois.
But Fiedorowicz (6-7, 250 pounds) put an end to his extensive recruiting process Thursday by giving an oral commitment to Illinois. The senior-to-be chose the Illini over scholarship offers from Notre Dame, Louisiana State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Iowa and Arizona.
“He’s the No. 1 player in Illinois and the No. 1 tight end in the country,’’ recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said. “It’s a good catch for Illinois.’’
Iowa and Ohio State were considered leaders for Fiedorowicz, but Illinois “came on strong’’ in the last few weeks, Lemming said. Illinois’ plan to utilize the tight end more in the passing game is also believed to be a factor.
‘‘He has as much or more potential than any tight end prospect ever to come out of Illinois,’’ Lemming said.
Fiedorowicz caught 49 passes last season for 809 yards and 11 touchdowns. His sophomore year he caught 64 passes for 1,043 yards and 11 scores.
“He’s a great athlete,’’ Lemming said. “I think he definitely has first-round (NFL) ability.’’
