Fremd's Christian Lombard, one of the top-rated offensive linemen in the Class of 2010, was watching the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday when he casually announced that he has made an oral commitment to Notre Dame.
Lombard, a 6-6, 290-pounder, said he made his declaration at this time because he didn't want any fanfare and wanted to make an early decision so he can concentrate on his senior season. He chose Notre Dame over Iowa and Wisconsin.
He is in San Antonio to participate in the U.S. Army's junior combine, which annually attracts 500 of the best prospects in the nation. Prior to the workouts, he was selected as one of 11 junior All-Americans.
Lombard, described by Fremd coach Mike Donatucci as "the best lineman I've had in 29 years," had more than 30 scholarship offers, including Illinois, Tennessee, Arizona and North Carolina, and could have expected several more if he had chosen to delay his decision.
"He is the No. 1 offensive lineman in Illinois and one of the top five in the United States," recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said. "It's a great early catch for Notre Dame. He is smart, technically sound, has good feet and is very athletic."
Glenbard West offensive lineman Chris Watt, one of the leading players in the Class of 2009 who participated in the All-American Bowl Saturday, also has committed to Notre Dame.
