Immaculate Conception running back Paul Hornstra, who carried 25 times for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the Class 2A final, was voted the top star of the state championships by YourSeason.com readers. Maine South quarterback Charlie Goro edged St. Francis running back Mark Kachmer for second.
Hornstra helped the Knights beat Casey-Westfield 36-17 to become the first team to go from a 5-4 regular season to a state title.
