Antioch running back Cameron White had a headache near the end of the Sequoits’ Class 6A state quarterfinal Saturday. He had just suffered a massive hit that knocked off his helmet at the end of regulation against Glenbard South and had to come back for overtime.
White came back with a winning halfback pass.
The visiting Sequoits outlasted host Glenbard South 28-27 in overtime in Glen Ellyn, advancing to the state semifinals for the first time in school history. This is the farthest No. 13 Antioch (12-0) has gone in the playoffs since 1985.
Glenbard South lineman Alex Pulos laid out White with nine seconds to go in regulation and Antioch at the Glenbard 4-yard line with the score tied at 21.
But on the Sequoits’ second play from scrimmage in overtime, quarterback Matt Romani handed White the ball on a botched play and White threw a 14-yard halfback pass to a waiting Romani in the end zone. The touchdown came a play after White ran for a four-yard loss.
“[Pulos] hit me in the chest and I think my head hit the ground,” White said. “It was designed to go right, but I rolled out and I saw Matt Romani in the end zone.”
White rushed for 141 yards on 22 carries and scored a touchdown. He also had a 66-yard punt return.
Romani said the winning catch was off a busted play.
“We have a play like that, but that’s not what was called,” Romani said. “It was supposed to be a pass, but to a wide receiver. They weren’t expecting it and it worked. I couldn’t believe I caught the ball.”
Glenbard South (9-3) scored in overtime when Austin Teitsma caught Trace Wanless’ six-yard pass. But Logan Futris’ kick was wide left.
