Robeson walked into a potential trap Thursday afternoon at Gately Stadium.
Fortunately for the Raiders, senior running back Martinez Young saved the day
His two fourth-down conversions keyed a 14-play, 68-yard scoring drive that enabled Robeson to avert the upset and ruin Corliss’ homecoming 22-6.
Young’s fourth-down, two-yard touchdown run capped the third-quarter drive and gave the Raiders some breathing room. Young also had a team-best 116 yards on 20 carries.
“We just executing better in the third quarter,” Young said. “The line blocked better, the receivers pushed their defenders off the ball and my fullback Chris (Sesson) made some big plays.”
Young’s touchdown was set up by his own six-yard run on fourth-and-five from the Corliss 13-yard line. His play helped Robeson (7-0, 4-0 in Illini Land of Lincoln) overcome a sluggish first half that saw the Raiders turn the ball twice on downs inside Corliss 20.
Robeson also had a second-quarter touchdown nullified on a holding penalty.
Sesson scored from one and two yards out for the Raiders. His initial score put Robeson ahead 8-0 with 9:50 to play in the second quarter.
Corliss (1-6, 0-4) responded behind quarterback William Kennebrew. His 40- and 32-yard pass completions set up a Daryen Barrett three-yard touchdown run that narrowed the Raiders’ lead to 8-6.
DuSable 56, Lindblom 0: Quarterback Jamari Sanford was 12-for-20 for 240 yards and four touchdowns through the air and also had a 65-yard touchdown catch. Receiver Jullion Johnson had six catches for 160 yards and three touchdowns and receiver Jamari Ryan had a touchdown catch for DuSable (7-0).
Hyde Park 42, Bowen 14: Hyde Park improved to 3-4 behind quarterback Jeremiah Kibble (14-for-32, 310 yards, four touchdowns).
