Two years ago when he was a sophomore, Barrington battered Palatine quarterback Matt Rossi. But on Saturday, it was Rossi’s turn as his Pirates stunned the host No. 8 Broncos 41-35 in a Mid-Suburban West game.
‘‘I used that game from two years ago as motivation,’’ said Rossi, who finished 22-of-28 passing for 324 yards and three touchdowns.
‘‘When we put in the spread offense this year, it really has been to our advantage. We feel like we can score at any time.’’
Rossi threw touchdown passes of 19 and 58 yards to Cody Bobbit and one of 15 yards to Jose Munoz. Rossi also threw a pair of conversion passes to Munoz.
Jack Hansen scored on a one-yard run and Bobbit threw a 40-yard option pass to Munoz for another score.
Despite all that offense, Rossi and the Pirates (4-2, 1-1) needed to score late in the game with the score tied at 35.
After a long kickoff return by James LaCapra, Rossi moved the Pirates downfield. He threw a 27-yard pass to Bobbit, who was tackled at the Barrington 2-yard line. Two plays later, Jack Hansen crashed over from the 3 with 51 seconds left to give Palatine a 41-35 advantage.
But Barrington (5-1, 1-1), which got a strong performances from running back Sam Ojuri (16 carries, 178 yards, three touchdowns) and quarterback Cody Seeger (17-for-24, 173 yards passing, 50 yards rushing, two touchdown runs) wasn’t done.
Seeger drove the Broncos to the Palatine 43 with 14 seconds remaining. On the last play, Seeger threw into the end zone, but Rossi, who came into play safety on the final series, intercepted the ball in the end zone.
‘‘We needed to find out what kind of team we are,’’ Palatine coach Tyler Donnelly said. “And I think we answered those questions today.’’
