If there were any doubts about Wheaton Warrenville South heading into this season, they should be gone by now.

For the second straight week, the Tigers knocked off a ranked opponent. Week 1 it was a 28-27 come-from-behind overtime win over standout quarterback John Whitelaw and Hinsdale Central; Week 2 it was a 31-6 victory over defending Class 6A state champion Joliet Catholic.

"We know it's important to start 2-0, especially against teams that always make the playoffs," WW South running back Peter Jarrett said. "To start off 2-0 is definitely a big confidence booster heading into [DuPage Valley Conference] play."

The wins also dispelled any theories that this is a rebuilding year for the Tigers.

"Every year they call it a rebuilding year for us because every year is senior-dominated,"said Jarrett, who had a one-yard touchdown run against the Hilltoppers. "That's just the way it is here. Usually we have a lot of fresh players coming in and stepping up."

Jarrett, a senior, credited the offensive line -- left tackle Chris Cortopassi, left guard Todd Lorenzini, center Nick Immekus, right guard David Blais and right tackle Rocco Ammons -- and the Tigers' defense for the win.

"When it came down to it [against Joliet Catholic], it was definitely our line play and our defense," he said. "To hold a defending state championship team to 6 points is something."

So what's the mood like WW South's locker room?

"Everybody is hoopering and hollering," Jarrett said. "That's the best part of football -- getting the 'W' and having fun with your friends."

BIG WINS

St. Joseph does it again. After ending its 45-game losing streak last week with a win over Ridgewood, the Chargers knocked off Argo 44-23 on Saturday in nonconference play ... Hillcrest upset Homewood-Flossmoor 6-2 on Friday.

QUOTES OF THE WEEK

“I wasn’t expecting a big day like this, maybe just three touchdowns. But as long as we got the win I didn’t care about the numbers. The offensive line, and the defense getting the ball back to the offense, I give all my credit to them. ... This is something I’ll tell my kids about." -- Nazareth running back LaSteven McKinney about his five touchdowns in a Week 2 win over Riverside-Brookfield.

“Well, he passed for two touchdowns and ran for two. So if he wants to stay reluctant and run for two touchdowns and pass for two, then we’ll keep him in there reluctant. ... We’re just fortunate to have a young man in there like that who is smart, has a 4-point-some average academically.” -- Morgan Park coach Lexie Spurlock about quarterback DaRon Brown's  performance on Friday.

‘‘At first, I thought we were playing for overtime. This is what high school football is all about. This is what you see in the movies.’’ -- Carmel quarterback Andrew Nerup about Carmel's late game-winning drive against Libertyville on Friday.
