Win or lose, Leo decided to put its fate in senior Robert Morgan’s hands on Saturday.
The Lions turned to their 6-foot-2, 225-pound running back and let him loose against Julian (0-2). Morgan didn’t let them down.
Rushing for 31 times, he picked up 169 yards and scored all three of Leo’s touchdowns as the Lions defeated Julian 20-12 in the nonconference match up at Gately Stadium.
Tied at halftime 6-6 after mixing it up offensively in the first half, Leo (2-0) stuck to Morgan almost completely in the final two quarters. Of the Lions’ 28 second-half plays, 20 of them were to Morgan.
“We got to run him,” Leo coach Michael Holmes said. “He’s a good running back. He reminds of me of Eddie George when he was at Ohio State. He’s doesn’t have blinding speed and he’s going to take his licks, but he’s going to get his yards.”
Morgan said, “My motor is always running. The more I run the ball the better I feel.”
Morgan scored on a two-yard run in the first half and later added scoring runs of eight yards and 31 yards. The final touchdown put Leo ahead 20-6 with 5:20 remaining in the game.
Brian McCain (16-yard run) and Kendrick Rainey (12-yard reception) scored Julian’s touchdowns.
