Grant Goebel caught a 27-yard touchdown pass with 52 seconds left in the second quarter and Montini’s defense made it stand up as the host Broncos held off Benet 14-6 on Saturday.
The play, which finished the scoring, came on a third-and-12 situation in which quarterback Tom DiCristina rolled to his right as four receivers went deep. DiCristina found the 6-3 Goebel in the right corner of the end zone and the senior jumped over 5-11 cornerback T.J. Milano to make the catch.
‘‘I got a little bit lucky,’’ Goebel said. ‘‘I got matched up with a guy a lot shorter than me. I just focused on the ball and went up and got it.’’
DiCristina (14-for-24, 132 yards, two touchdowns) was nearly sacked on the play but knew who to look for as he scrambled.
‘‘We set it up in the first quarter and we were waiting to hit them with it,’’ DiCristina said. ‘‘When we did it was wide open over the top. I saw the mismatch … so I just threw it up there for him to grab.’’
Showing vast improvement from Week 1, Benet (0-2) forced two early turnovers and took a 6-0 lead on a two-yard pass from Jimmy Riley to Neil Ostrander with 9:27 left in the second quarter. On the ensuing possession, Montini (2-0) took a 7-6 lead on DiCristina’s four-yard pass to Brendan Shannon and Matt Kersten’s extra-point kick.
The Broncos were held to 201 yards of total offense but only gave up 165. The Redwings drove to the Montini 6 before turning the ball over on downs.
