How not to win a close game was a lesson the Proviso East football team learned in its opener.

The Pirates came up an inch short in the final minute of scoring what likely would have been a game-winning touchdown in the season opener against St. Patrick.

Proviso East (1-1) faced another win-or-lose situation in the final minute on Saturday against Lyons. This time, however, the Pirates learned how to win a close game.

The Pirates stopped the Lions (0-2) on a fourth-and-five at the Proviso East 7 with the clock going under a minute to play in the game to preserve a 20-14 win over Lyons in a West Suburban Conference crossover.

"We had the same opportunity the previous week,'' Proviso East coach Aaron Peppers said. "We stepped up this time and won.''

Lyons called a swing pass on the fourth-down play to David Bellisario coming out of the backfield. Bellisario was group-tackled two yards short of the first-down marker by Jawon Spivery, Arian Wade and Kiara Johnson.

Lyons looked very sharp on the first possession of the game, marching 63 yards and scoring on a 17-yard run by Deonte Brown. The extra point was added by Ethan Guenther with nine minutes, 10 seconds on the clock.

Spivery recovered a fumble and returned it 17 yards to pull the Pirates within 7-6 with 44.2 seconds left in the first quarter.

Lyons increased the lead to 14-6 on its first possession of the second half on a 35-yard run by Bellisario.

The Proviso East rally started on a four-yard TD pass from William Crowder to Zaire Harris with 9:24 left in the game. The game-winning points came on a 41-yard TD pass from Crowder to Antoine Lewis with just over four minutes left in the game. Crowder connected with Corey Cooper for the two-point conversion.
