Carmel quarterback Andrew Nerup didn’t put up big numbers in Carmel's 21-14 win over Libertyville, but he had a flair for the dramatic. Nerup and the No. 4 Corsairs (2-0) drove 80 yards in 25 seconds, delivering the stunning blow Friday with a 46-yard strike to Matt Fellicelli to defeat host Libertyville.
‘‘At first, I thought we were playing for overtime,’’ Nerup said. ‘‘This is what high school football is all about. This is what you see in the movies.’’
The Wildcats (0-2) recovered a Carmel fumble near midfield with less than two minutes to go, and tied the game at 14 on a two-yard run by Kevin Verlee with 46 seconds left.
Carmel’s winning drive took only three plays, as Nerup’s touchdown pass was preceded by two long runs from running back Sean Madison. Nerup completed only three passes in the game, including a 38-yard touchdown pass to Fellicelli during the second quarter.
Nerup accounted for Carmel’s other score with a 22-yard run that put the Corsairs ahead 14-7 in the fourth quarter.
