Versatile Brown leads Mustangs past Richards

DaRon Brown got to do what he likes to do best Friday night in Morgan Park’s 48-21 nonconference victory over host Richards.

That would be, make a reception and go in for a touchdown.

But he also ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more. And if the reluctant quarterback thinks that Morgan Park coach Lexie Spurlock is going to take him out of the starting slot any time soon ...

“Well, he passed for two touchdowns and ran for two,” Spurlock said. “So if he wants to stay reluctant and run for two touchdowns and pass for two, then we’ll keep him in there reluctant.

“We’re just fortunate to have to a young man in there like that who is smart, has a 4-point-some average academically.”

Brown finished with 242 yards rushing and 107 passing as Morgan Park improved to 1-1.

Junior quarterback Jon Ryan threw two touchdown passes and ran for another for Richards (1-1).

The first five minutes gave every indication that it was going to be a defensive battle. But then Brown showed what he could do for the Mustangs, and started a romp.

It was first-and-15 from the Morgan Park 10 when Brown, from shotgun formation, took the snap and shot through an opening on the left side. He left the final Richards defender behind at about the Bulldogs 20.

The 90-yard run, with 6:31 left in the first period, made it 6-0.

The Mustangs’ next possession started at their own 28. It ended on the second play when Brown again took off on a quarterback run, stutter-stepping through the line and breezing from there to a 68-yard score. Dominique Bell’s PAT run was successful.

Richards got within 14-7 with 10:50 left in the first half on a 25-yard run by Ryan and a PAT kick by Kyle Renken, but Morgan Park would stay a couple of steps ahead the rest of the night.

Brown caught a 25-yard TD pass from freshman Daeshan Hurley to make it 20-7, then went back behind center and threw 30 yards to a wide-open Calvin Brookins for another tally.

In the second half, Jajuan Lewis added a 10-yard run, Bell a 7-yard run, and DeVontre Spears a 10-yard pass reception from Brown for the Mustangs.

Ryan threw for two touchdowns for Richards, hooking up with Keith Sconiers for 23 and 53 yards.
