Mount Carmel topples Wolfpack

Brett Butler had a rough game in Mount Carmel's season opener and an even rougher week getting ready for Friday's matchup with St. Ignatius.

But after the senior caught two touchdown passes and had the Caravan's first punt return for a touchdown in seven seasons, it was all good again.

"I was trying to make up for what I did (in Week 1)," Butler said after top-ranked Mount Carmel's 55-3 romp past the Wolfpack at Gately Stadium. "I was more focused on what I had to do, studied my assignments and it worked out."

By being on the receiving end of two scoring passes from Jordan Lynch, Butler won't be on the receiving end of jibes from his buddies.

"I think he was trying to make up for the two touchdowns he dropped last week," coach Frank Lenti said. "He took a lot of grief from his friends all week for that."

Butler should be hearing compliments as the Caravan (2-0) prepares for its first major test, a date at Providence next Friday. Ditto for several of his teammates.

Lynch, who ran for three touchdowns and passed for another while playing just one quarter against Curie in Week 1, accounted for three more scores against the Wolfpack in one half of action. He ran three times for 23 yards and a touchdown and was 3-of-4 passing for 57 yards and two scores.

"He throws the ball right there every single time. He's awesome," said Butler, whose touchdown catches covered 40 and 14 yards.

Also impressive was junior Milton Greer, who broke off a 77-yard touchdown run as an encore to his 73-yarder vs. Curie.

"He played defensive line last year -- shows you how smart our coaches are," Lenti said with a smile. "But he's still learning the offense."

The Caravan also scored a pair of defensive touchdowns, getting interception returns for touchdowns by Dimitrius Carr (30 yards) and Eddie Antonietti (47 yards). Backup quarterback Chris Sujka added a 10-yard touchdown run.

"We're fortunate we've got a quality quarterback and three quality running backs and some wide receivers," Lenti said. "The way Jordan throws the ball and runs the option, when we're on our game, we can score a lot of different ways."
