Hubbard standout linebacker Darius Moffett has just about made up his mind.
Moffett, one of the most heavily recruited defensive players in the Chicago area, said Thursday “he is close to deciding” on a college and that three schools -- Illinois, Cincinnati and Louisville -- stand out amongst his seven scholarship offers.
“In deciding, I look at the history of the linebackers at the schools to see if they were successful,” said Moffett, an All-Public League selection and a four-year starter at Hubbard. “I also look to see if I have a chance to play even as soon as my sophomore year.”
Moffett (6-3, 225 pounds) also has offers from Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas State and Michigan State, while Minnesota has recently increased its contact with him.
“He’s got exceptional potential,” said recruiting analyst Tom Lemming, who considers Moffett the best linebacker prospect in Illinois.
“He’s got the potential to be a great player. ... He’s got all the tools to be real good. This season he should be able to take it to another level.”
Lemming said Moffett, who caught six touchdown passes as a tight end last season and is expected to see action at the same position this season, is “good enough to play both ways,” but that he is best suited to play linebacker.
And that’s just fine with the Hubbard senior, since linebacker is the position he prefers.
“When I make contact with somebody, I want them to wake up in the morning and be like ‘Man, that linebacker from Hubbard was everywhere,’” Moffett said. “I don’t want to hurt anybody. I just want them to think twice about entering the hole.”
CORSAIR ON THE MAP
According to Carmel coach Andy Bitto, Corsairs senior safety Jake Sinkovec (6-4, 215) has offers from Air Force and Navy. Sinkovec is expected to be a standout again for Carmel this season, Bitto said.
LIVING ON THE EDGE
According to EdgyTim.com, Naperville North offensive tackle Jake Baratz gave an oral commitment to Arizona on Tuesday night. Baratz (6-4, 275) chose Arizona over offers from Miami of Ohio and Northern Illinois.
