Community FAQ

What does it mean to become a member?

We ask that visitors fill out a membership form in order to leave comments on online stories, and to recommend online stories to other visitors.

How do I become a member?

To become a member, click on "Login or Register" button near the top of the page. Once a box opens, you will see a "Register here" link. Fill out the membership form and click on "Save." Once you hit "Save," the process of becoming a member is complete. You will need to log in to the sign in box. After this, close the box, and you are logged in.

What benefits do I get as a member?

As a member, you can participate in an online conversation by contributing your own comments on articles across Sun-Times News Group sites. You can also leave feedback for our reporters and converse with other readers on the site.

What does it cost to become a member?

It's free to be a member.

How will you use my personal information I provide when becoming a member?

To learn more about our privacy policy, click here.

I forgot my password. What do I do?

Click the "Register or Login" link in the upper right part of the page. Next click on the "Forgot Password" link. Enter your e-mail address in the box that shows, and click "Submit." Your password will be reset, and a new password will be e-mailed to you.

How do I change my password?

To change your password, log in. Once in, click on the "edit account" link in the upper right part of the page, fill in your current password and your new password (and type in your new password again to confirm it). Then click "Submit." Your new password will take effect right away.

What's the difference between a username and a display name?

Your username is the name that you use to sign in. The username is private. Your display name, however, is visible to the public. You need a display name so that your contributions to the site can be distinguished from the contributions of others. Your display name is the visible identification of you that other users on the site will see when they read your comments on stories.

How do I post a comment on a story?

To add a comment on an article, you must be logged in (see above for instructions on how to log in). After you have signed in, you can type your comment in the box provided below each article and click "Submit." Your comment will show up directly below the comment box. You cannot edit comments once they're posted, and comments are filtered for inappropriate language before they're posted. HTML and scripting are not allowed in comments. Comments also are subject to our submission policy. To learn more about our submission policy, click here.

How do I recommend a story?

Anyone can recommend an article to other users, and you do not have to be signed in to do so. On any article that you want other visitors to notice, you can click "Recommend" at the top of the article, near the headline. Once you have clicked "Recommend" the article will show how many users have recommended that article.
