Beating a team three times in a season is hard enough, let alone four. But that’s what New Trier did to Evanston, topping the Wildkits 25-17, 25-21 at home Friday in the sectional semifinals.
The win sets up a rematch of last year's sectional finals between New Trier and Glenbrook North. The Trevians (28-10) beat the Spartans on their way to a second-place finish.
“We lost to Glenbrook North earlier this year,” New Trier coach Sue Haak said. “But we’ve really grown in confidence over the final stretch of the season and we’re going to take that into the game against them.”
Erik Brand led the Trevians attack with 10 kills, while Will Hart added seven and Joe Shook provided five in support.
After trailing 15-7 in Game 2, the Wildkits (25-13) outscored New Trier 14-8 to pull within 23-21 before the Trevians settled the match with Sam Van Horn delivering an ace for the game-winning point.
Glenbrook North dispatched Maine South 25-15, 25-23 in the earlier semifinal to reach the sectional finals for the third consecutive season.
Billy Vydra paced the Spartans (35-2) with 11 kills and seven digs. Chris Curry and Sajid Bhimani added five kills each for Glenbrook North.
