It may not have been the kind of beginning Plainfield Central boys volleyball coach Jackelyn Gruneich had in mind when her Wildcats started down 6-0 to Oswego East in regional action.
"I told them to relax, to have some fun," said Gruneich. "The seniors... It could be their last match so I told them to have fun with it."
Fun they did.
While Oswego East won the first game 25-20 it was Plainfield Central who went on to win the second game 25-21.
The third and final game, which Plainfield Central won 28-26, was pulsating.
The Wolves rallied from 8-4 down to take an 11-8 advantage. The Wildcats had three of their own to tie the game at 11. From there, both teams traded points until Plainfield Central took its chance with the game on the line.
With Plainfield Central having a one point advantage at 27-26,Spencer Hill tapped over a mis-played clearance to secure victory.
"Knowing that this could be their last game was enough motivation," added the Wildcats coach.
Though Plainfield Central ended up as the winning side, it was Oswego East that played better throughout. Setter Ethan Van Camp was steady throughout and set up his teammates with a bevy of opportunities. However, his teammates' lack of focus was the ultimate demise according to Wolves coach Keri Olejniczak.
"We had a couple of mis-serves at key times that we wish didn't happen," said Olejniczak. "This is the best regional showing we've had as a varsity program so we can't complain."
