Karl Nerger had a game-high seven kills and eight service points to power Northside Prep to its first Public League championship with a 25-12, 25-21 victory over Whitney Young Friday at Attack Athletics.

The top-seeded Mustangs (28-2) lost to Young in their season opener, but have since beaten the Dolphins (21-11) three times.

“It’s great for me because I was with the team two years ago when we made it to [the city final] and kind of got embarrassed by Lincoln Park,” said Nerger, a 6-3 outside hitter. “So it was nice to come in here and win one.”

Northside was dominant in the opener as No. 2-seeded Young scored consecutive points on just two occasions.

The Dolphins put up a fight in the second game, jumping ahead 9-5 before the Mustangs asserted themselves at the net behind Nerger and 6-6 senior middle blocker Jack Moore. Moore had two blocks and three kills, including the one that brought Northside to match point.

“We knew we had potential and that [loss to Young] just lit us up the rest of the season,” Moore said. “It showed [us that] we’re not invincible and we need to work, and that was good for us.”

Setter John Konow had 14 assists and four kills for Northside, while Craig Melhuse and Kevin Menczynski each had three kills.

Konrad Klimek and Albert Klimek eachhad four kills for Young.
