Northside Prep is one victory away from winning its first city championship in boys volleyball after knocking off visiting Lane 25-18, 25-11 on Wednesday in the Public League semifinals.
The top-seeded Mustangs (27-2) broke a 13-13 tie in the first game by scoring five straight points on Jack Moore’s serve. Junior middle blocker Craig Melhuse had a kill and a block during the run and finished with a match-high 10 kills and two blocks.
"We tried to come out with intensity and play at the top of our game because we knew that Lane would come out really strong," said Melhuse, whose team beat the Indians for the third time.
"During the run we knew that we had to cover their tips and have good passing, and that’s when we started playing well."
Moore had five kills and Kevin Menczynski and Karl Nerger both had four for Northside. The Mustangs also received 22 assists from John Konow and nine service points, including four aces, from Luke Sobieraj. Rodolfo Fransual led Lane (13-11) with five kills.
Northside will face No. 2 seed Young in Friday’s title game at Attack Athletics. The Dolphins (21-10) came back in both sets to defeat Payton 25-21, 25-21.
Ben Toh served eight straight points as Young rallied from a 20-16 deficit in the opener, and Albert Klimek spiked four of his 13 kills during a 10-5 run to close game two.
Konrad Klimek added six kills and nine assists for Young. Payton (13-11) got five kills each from Kevin Kingsley and Faris Cano.
