Sometimes the difference between winning and losing is as simple as which court you defend.
“Our guys really wanted to play on the same side they did in game two,” Morton coach Tony Hornilla said. “But we lost the toss.”
Morton (19-5) also lost the match to host York, 25-16, 15-25, 25-9. The team defending the court on the east side of the York gymnasium won each game.
“I told them that which side they play on shouldn’t make any difference,” Hornilla said. “The courts are the same size.”
But the teams were not. York used its height advantage to overwhelm the Morton block. The Dukes (16-11) got 10 kills from 6-foot-3 senior Matt Brahm, seven from 6-5 senior Roger Coffin, four from 6-5 senior Ken Osgood and eight kills from 6-3 junior Steve Ogden.
“They were obviously much taller than us,” Hornilla said. “Even if we got a good block up we barely touched the ball.”
Sal Diaz led Morton with eight kills and Jose Mora had 15 assists and three aces. Junior setter Sean Davis had 28 assists for York.
“We needed to win, we needed to get back into a groove,” Brahm said. “We’d lost a couple in a row, but we’ve been working hard in practice.”
