Even though Northside Prep had already declared its revenge on Young, the Mustangs sought it a second time on Thursday.
Making up once again for its season-opening and lone loss of the year, Northside Prep defeated the visiting Dolphins 25-20, 25-15 in a Public League match up.
“This is only team we’ve lost to this season,” explained junior John Konow of the team’s motivation.
Since that loss, the Mustangs have been unstoppable. Thursday’s win marked their 11th straight, which has included twice over rival Young (12-5, 5-1).
“They’ve been progressing since Day 1,” Northside Prep coach Nicole Flores said. “Our passing and defense has gotten better.”
The Mustangs (11-1, 6-1) showed off both skills in Thursday’s win.
Down 11-8 in the first set, Northside Prep’s defense and passing led to seven consecutive points and helped hold off Young the rest of the way. In the second set, the Mustangs took over at a similar point. The Dolphins pulled within 12-11 when Northside Prep answered with an 8-1 run.
Young coach Jamie Walters couldn’t believe what she saw.
“Everything was off,” she said. “Our serve-receive was off. Our hitting was off. Our passing was off. This is the worst we’ve ever played. Hopefully, this is the first and last time this happens.”
Karl Nerger (12 kills), Craig Melhuse (eight kills) and Konow (20 assists) led the Mustangs. Konrad Klimek had a team-high seven kills for Young.
