As soon as Northside Prep’s Jack Moore saw the draw of Saturday’s volleyball tournament, he knew what he wanted to happen.

“We wanted Whitney Young in the end,” Moore said.

After losing to Young in three games on Tuesday, Moore and the Mustangs got their wish and their revenge on Saturday as they defeated the Dolphins 25-10, 25-22 in the championship of the Northside Prep tournament.

Unlike the previous loss, the Mustangs (6-1) made sure they were ready for Young (6-2).

“We didn’t bring any intensity the first time,” said Moore, who was named to the all-tournament team. “We came in today and knew what we needed to do. Our intensity level increased by a million.”

It showed in the opening game of the championship as Northside Prep built a lead and ran away it. The Dolphins made things more interesting in the second game, but ultimately couldn’t overcome the absence of two of their middle hitters.

The Dolphins would like another rematch.

“We’re hoping to see them again in the CPS playoffs,” Young’s Konrad Klimek said. “We’ll give them a better game for sure.”

John Konow (six kills, 16 assists), Lucas Reczek (20 digs) and tournament MVP Karl Nerger (12 kills, eight digs) led Northside Prep in the championship. Klimek, a senior, and his brother sophomore Albert Klimek were named to the all-tournament team along with St. Patrick’s Joe Shoemaker, Konow and Payton’s Shareef Denden.

St. Pat’s defeated Payton in the third-place match.
