Hinsdale Central threw a major scare at defending state champion Wheaton Warrenville South the all-directional sectional at Willowbrook.
But the Tigers rallied in Game 2 and put the Red Devils away in Game 3 with a 23-25, 25-21, 25-18 victory.
‘‘Hinsdale Central is a great team,’’ said WW South’s Bryan Mueller, who led the team with 13 kills and 2 blocks. ‘‘We came in with a complacent attitude, but hats off to them. We knew they weren’t going to go away.’’
Neill Nystrom added 10 kills, Rob Samp had nine kills and setter Joe Kelly had 32 assists and four kills for WW South (34-4). Jordan Williams led Hinsdale Central (32-5) with 13 kills and junior Graham McIlvaine added 13 assists, five kills and a block.
“If they’re No. 1, we’re No. 2,” Hinsdale Central coach Len Serwat said. “These last few days I strongly felt that we were the only team in the state that could match up with them. We had the size, playing abilitiy and experience. But we couldn’t top their middles and we made a couple errors here and there. But we were right there.”
Tim Lovik had 20 kills and Mark Jones added 13 kills and 20 assists to led Glenbard East (36-2) to a 25-20, 21-25, 25-9 victory over Downers Grove South in Friday’s first semifinal.
Glenbard East squandered a 20-18 lead in game two but took control early in game three opening a 14-3 lead and cruising into Tuesday’s championship match.
Buddy Steinhaus and Julius Staisiunas each had seven kills for Downers South (24-14).
