It was a good night for Hinsdale Central thanks to Mark Knight on Friday at North Central College in Naperville.

The forward’s ninth goal of the season with 6:19 to play in the second overtime propelled the Red Devils to a 2-1 victory over New Trier in the Class AA state quarterfinals.

It also propelled his squad into today's 11 a.m. semifinal against Barrington (23-2) while ending the Trevians' hopes of repeating as state champs.

"I was just feeling it when I saw the ball," said Knight, who headed home Jason Loebig's assist.

Another reason why it was a good night for Knight and Co. was due to the play of goalie John Shakon. The senior stood on his head at times to make sure the Trevians wouldn't avenge a 2-0 loss to the Red Devils earlier in the season.

"It's great to turn around and see him standing behind me," said Hinsdale Central defender David Tiemstra, who scored the game's first goal with 15:32 to play in regulation. "He made some great saves tonight out of nowhere."

Chris Ritter tallied the lone goal for New Trier (21-3-1), which also lost to Hinsdale Central 2-0 in 2006.

"That was a great team we just beat, and now we're going to face another great team [in Barrington]," Shakon said.

Barrington 3, Collinsville 0

The Broncos have been an offensive force all season and were once again against the Kahoks (15-10-2). Leading 1-0 with 20 minutes to play, Barrington blew open the contest with two goals in a three-minute span and cruised to victory.

Ryan Mangone got the Broncos on the board with 14 minutes remaining in the first half. The senior hammered home his ninth goal of the season thanks to Francesco Furio's seventh assist of the season.

This was a tough game for both teams," said Barrington coach Scott Steib, whose defense has allowed only one team to score more than two goals this season. "There was no flow to the game because of some of the calls. But I thought we got stronger as the game went on."

After both teams were unable to convert on potential goal-scoring opportunities, Barrington landed the knockout punch courtesy of Ata Ozbay.

The junior's first goal came with 19:30 to play to make it 2-0. Minutes later, Furio drilled a one-timer from the top of the box that Collinsville goalie Robert Randant stopped. But the 6-foot junior gave up a rebound, and Ozbay made him pay by burying the ball in the left corner.

Neuqua Valley 3, Centennial 2

Bret Hruby's nickname is "shrub" because of his small stature. But the 5-8 forward played big during the Wildcats' come-from-behind victory.

The senior found the back of the net three times, the last one coming with 8:37 remaining to break a 2-2 deadlock.

"I was starting to get nervous when there was 10 minutes left and the score was tied 2-2," said Hruby, who now has a team-leading 25 goals. "I wanted to score so bad, and I did."

Neuqua Valley (23-1-4), which hasn't lost to an Illinois team this season, will face Rockford Boylan in this morning's 9 a.m. semifinal.

"[Champaign Centennial] surprised us and came out with a lot of fire," said Hruby, who recorded his second hat trick of the season.

After the Chargers (21-3-3) took a 1-0 lead, Hruby scored his first goal on a bicycle kick from inside the box. Minutes later, he gave his squad its first lead of the game at 2-1. Champaign Centennial eventually tied the match with 15 minutes to play in the second half before Hruby struck again.

"[Bret] is a gutty guy," said Neuqua Valley coach Jim Johns, who own a 105-15-11 record since the start of the 2003 season. "He has a nose for the goal."

Rockford Boylan 4, Lemont 2

Thanks to goals from Travis Haug, Angel Ramirez, Rocco Taglia and Brian Klazura, Rockford Boylan (24-3) became just the fourth team since the IHSA split soccer into two classes in 1996 to score four goals in a quarterfinal game.

Only the 1999 New Trier team, which scored five goals against Conant, had scored more in any state finals game. Kyle Spoo and Tom McGuire tallied for the Indians (22-3-3).
