Farragut’s Michael Dunigan and Oak Park’s Iman Shumpert check in from New York City with their second diaries. Dunigan and Shumpert will be playing in the Jordan Brand Classic on Saturday.

Iman Shumpert:

I won the slam dunk contest Thursday night. It was held at Long Island University. DeMar DeRozan (Southern California) dropped out at the last minute, so it was me, Drew Gordon (UCLA), Devin Ebanks (Indiana) and 7-footer B.J. Mullens (Ohio State).

I ended up doing a 360-pump, then I did a 360-reverse windmill. I had a through-the-legs dunk ready, but they told me I didn’t need it because I had a perfect score. I did the 360-reverse windmill once in the McDonald’s warm-up line. So I was thinking about doing it again. I saw how high I got on the 360-pump, so I tried it again and it worked. Once you hear that crowd go ‘Woo' it puts a smile on your face. You see all your boys run out there with chest bumps and hi-fives. At the McDonald’s game, I missed my second dunk and got eliminated. But I had the high-score on my first one.

I had a good run in the scrimmage on Friday. The ball is being shared a lot more than at the McDonald’s game. I got moved to a different team, so that helps. Everyone is just a little more unselfish. Last time at the McDonald’s game, we were mixing pretty well, but when the game started everyone started looking out for themselves. Hopefully that doesn’t happen tomorrow. If it does, oh well. It’s an all-star game.

I do want to have a good showing tomorrow, especially since it’s at Madison Square Garden. It’s M.J.’s favorite place for a reason. You always want to play well in New York and Madison Square Garden. So I’m looking to come in and have a good showing.

Michael Dunigan:

I’m having a good time out here right now. I’m kind of tired from playing in the scrimmage on Friday. We had to get up at 8 a.m.

Later, we went over to a grammar school and did some basketball activities with the students. We also had a Q&A with them. They asked questions like ‘How are you?’, 'Why do you play basketball?’, ‘How did you get so tall?’ Just the basic stuff. I have no problem with it.

The teams got switched up a little bit from the McDonald’s game. It’s good. It gives you a different flow and different team variety.

Other than that, I’m looking forward to playing at the Madison Square Garden. It’s my first time in New York, so I haven’t been there. I haven’t checked New York much by myself. Hopefully, we’ll get to do that on Saturday.
