The much anticipated matchup between Englewood and North Lawndale is on for Friday, but only after the Eagles overcame a gritty performance by Northridge Prep for a 60-50 win Wednesday in the Luther North Sectional semifinals.
Englewood (25-3) grabbed an early 15-point lead as its defense forced the Knights into 12 first-half turnovers. The Knights (18-11) rebounded in the second half committing only one turnover and cutting into Englewood’s lead to trail 56-50 with 46 seconds remaining in the game.
But a three-pointer and two free throws by Demone Robinson and two free throws by Nick Waddell iced the game for Englewood
“They ran the stuff out of their offense," Englewood coach Louis Adams said. "They are a well-coached team that can shoot the lights out. We never give up 50 points, but our kids responded to the challenge. It was our offensive execution that won it for us today.”
Waddell had a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds, while DeMarkus Isom-Jones added 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Northridge Prep sank 11 three-pointers in the game with Jack Whalen scoring 21 points, including five three-pointers. Robert Grey had 18 points, all on three-pointers.
“That first quarter really killed us. We turned the ball over nine of our first 13 possessions," Northridge coach Will Ray said. “But I was very impressed with them.”
