It is entirely appropriate Jeff Stanciel-Wynn has three names. The way he shoots the three-pointer, you’d think he patented it.
The Oak Park guard converted seven three-pointers and scored a career-high 23 points as the Huskies showcased their depth, size and versatility in pounding No. 23 Zion-Benton 56-41 in second day of play at the Lane Thanksgiving tournament.
Stanciel-Wynn came off the bench in producing a career-high in three-pointers. “My coaches saw that I was hot, and they kept telling me to shoot pretty much every time I touched the ball,” the senior said.
“The thing I was focused on was getting my feet set and elevating on the jump shot,” he said. “My teammates did a great job of looking for me.”
The Huskies caught a break by playing a Zion-Benton team without star guard Lenzelle Smith. The Ohio State recruit suffered an ankle injury in practice. He has not played in the first two games of the season.
“I hope to be back by the weekend,” Smith said. “We’re just being careful and waiting for the swelling to go down.”
Oak Park (2-0) was also short-handed, playing without forward Andrew Godbold, the team’s leading returning scorer and rebounder, who is recovering from a strained groin. Underlying their depth, the Huskies dominated despite 6-8 Jeff Dirkin going scoreless. He attempted just one shot. Dirkin blocked five shots and grabbed seven rebounds.
“I tell the kids we have 10 starters,” Oak Park coach Matt Maloney said. “This is what we stressed over the summer that regardless of who we put in there, we expect to get production from them.”
Stanciel-Wynn drilled four three-pointers in the first half to stake the Huskies to a 28-17 lead at the break. The Huskies put the game out of reach by opening the third and fourth quarters with 8-0 runs. Oak Park led by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter.
Mortell Flowers scored eight points and Aaron Levin added seven for the Huskies. Seven different Oak Park players scored.
Junior guard Dondre Osborne scored 10 points for the Zee-Bees (1-1).
Earlier, junior guard Adonis Filer scored a career-best 23 points to power No. 3 Mount Carmel over Taft 75-47. The Caravan (2-0) is also playing without star guard and Illinois recruit Tracy Abrams. Senior Billy Clark added 16 points and sophomore Malcolm Hill-Bey contributed nine points for the Caravan. Gerardo Sandoval scored 11 to lead the Eagles (0-2).
Quinton Chievous scored 15 points and Shawn Wallace added 13 points as Notre Dame eased past Lane 56-34. Anton Adkins scored 11 points for the Indians (0-2).
