East Aurora guard Ryan Boatright is one of those special players that you just have to watch.
Everytime he touches the ball, it seems like something spectacular could happen – maybe good, maybe bad – but always interesting.
Boatright was fantastic Monday against St. Joseph at the St. Charles East Thanksgiving Tournament. He finished with 29 points, seven assists, seven rebounds and four steals as the No. 12 Tomcats defeated No. 10 St. Joseph 79-74.
“The intensity in the gym was so high,” Boatright said. “I was pumped up and just felt so strong.”
Boatright didn’t score in the first quarter, letting Oswego East transfer Snoop Viser (18 points) do the damage, but the junior star came alive in crunch time.
The Chargers (0-1) led by five late in the third quarter. Boatright closed out the third with a dunk and an assist on Tramell Weathersby’s three to tie the score. Then he opened the fourth with another assist to Weathersby (18 points) for a dunk, and a steal and dunk of his own to put East Aurora (1-0) ahead for good.
The Chargers had an almost nine minute stretch without a field goal in the second half.
“I think our conditioning was the difference,” Boatright said. “Last year we would have been too tired to pull that out.”
Brandon Carr led St. Joseph with 25 points and eight rebounds and Wayne Simon added 19.
