Hales junior Dominique Wells’ family was not happy that his name was left out of the Sun-Times’ preseason basketball preview.
The 6-4 forward made sure to get his name in Tuesday’s paper, scoring 28 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to lead the No. 19 Spartans to a 82-70 win over Proviso West Monday in the St. Charles East Thanksgiving Tournament.
Wells had 20 in the first half, including three dunks.
The Panthers (0-1) hung around for two-and-a-half quarters, until Hales senior Patrick Miller turned things on. He scored seven points in a 13-2 third-quarter run that put the Spartans (1-0) ahead 60-45 with 3:30 left in the quarter.
Wells is a relative unknown on the basketball scene. He played with three different club teams this summer and spent the majority of last season on Hales’ sophomore team.
“I felt great out there,” Wells said. “I’ve got more confidence this year and I think my teammates have more confidence in me, too.”
Hales senior Jamie Adams drained four three-pointers and finished with 16 points. Miller scored 14 and Aaron Armstead added 13. Sophomore Aaric Armstead contributed six points and 11 rebounds for the Spartans.
Paul Howard, a 6-7 wide-bodied senior, led Proviso West with 18 points and nine rebounds and Ryan Woods added 13 points and 11 rebounds.
