Thornton guard Reggie Smith ended his recruitment today as he committed and signed a letter of intent to play for Marquette.
Smith, a 6-0 senior, signed the letter this morning, making his decision official.
“Reggie committed yesterday and a Marquette assistant called today and told me he had signed,” said Thornton coach Troy Jackson. “We talked about it yesterday after practice and he’s excited.”
Recruiting analyst Joe Henricksen believes Reggie can be a nice fit at Marquette.
“Reggie fits in nicely with the type of athletes Marquette has brought in both in the 2009 class and the 2010 class," Henricksen said. "And it's a nice fit in that he won't have a ton of pressure to produce right away with the perimeter talent in those two classes."
“I really like how he plays the game. He plays hard, with toughness and with confidence. He has a terrific first step and has off-the-charts athleticism. He's a high-major athlete. In time he has the capability to be a terrific perimeter defender at the highest level, capable of becoming a frustrating on-the-ball defender.”
The high-flying Smith was a Sun-Times All-Area and All-State selection last year as he led Thornton to a SICA East title and a third place finish in Class 4A.
He is also nursing an ankle injury and could miss some time for No. 6 Thornton.
“He injured his ankle about three weeks ago,” Jackson said. “He is still waiting for clearance from the doctor. He could be back to practice Monday but he could miss the first tournament of the year.”
Thornton opens the season Tuesday in the Decatur Thanksgiving tournament against Decatur Eisenhower.
