Senior Matt Merrigan, the projected starting point guard for Glenbrook North's boys basketball team, suffered a serious injury to his left knee Monday afternoon near the end of the Spartans' first preseason practice.
Merrigan was the sixth player for last year's Class 4A sectional championship team and was expected to start now that former guards Connor Nass and Jordan Schmidt have graduated. The Spartans (23-5 last year) hope to defend their Central Suburban League title behind returning starters Alex Dragicevich, who plans on signing with Notre Dame Wednesday, and three-point specialist Austin Weber.
Merrigan's injury occurred during a drill with about 30 minutes left before the end of practice.
"Alex and Matt collided," Glenbrook North coach David Weber said. "I heard a pop."
Merrigan had to be helped off the court. He was taken for an MRI exam after practice, Weber said.
The injury could become the second serious injury suffered by a GBN player in as many years. Starting center Tyler Ponticelli, currently a freshman forward at Brown, was shut down early last season due to a back injury and returned briefly during the playoffs.
