Elgin and Larkin both ended the first night of the Streamwood Shootout on a high note Friday.
The Maroons bounced back from a pair of losses to start the event by rallying to beat East Aurora 48-46 in overtime. Senior Tim Newcombe grabbed an offensive rebound and connected for the game-winning put back while drawing a foul with 12 seconds left in the extra period to key the victory.
On the adjacent court, the Royals were wrapping up a 63-55 victory against the host Sabres. Larkin, which also lost its first two games of the night, led Streamwood by eight points with 10 minutes left and was never threatened down the stretch.
"It felt good to get that win," Larkin senior Drew Simonini said. "We didn't play that well in the first game but we were able to finish strong. Now we've got to get ready for tomorrow."
The Shootout continues at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the start of a double-elimination tournament. Conant and Lake Park both went 3-0 in their respective pools to earn the top seeds going into Saturday's action. The other six teams in the field all went 1-2.
Hampshire, which is the only Class 3A team in the field, made a good impression early. The Whip-Purs hung with East Aurora before losing 58-55 in the opener. Hampshire then knocked off Elgin in its second game before ending the night with a 57-35 loss to Conant.
Streamwood opened the event with a loss to Lake Park before bouncing back with a 52-47 win against Schaumburg in the middle game. Larkin lost to Schaumburg and Lake Park to start the night. Elgin's first loss came against Conant.
The tournament's championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday. The first games of the day will pit Conant vs. Streamwood, Schaumburg vs. Elgin, East Aurora vs. Larkin and Lake Park vs. Hampshire.
The Shootout is open to the public. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students. Concessions will be available.
