Brandon Paul got things started for Warren, but it was his teammates who finished off Lake Forest 66-45 at the Class 4A Waukegan Sectional on Tuesday.
"We came in with the mind set that we did not want it to be close," said Paul, who finished with 29 points on 9-of-16 shooting and 16 rebounds.
"They paid a lot more attention to me in the second half. That opened it up for everyone else."
The teams split their first two meetings and shot poorly in the first quarter Tuesday as they combined to hit just 5 of 28 shots. Matt Vogrich and Lake Forest (23-5) then heated up as the Scouts built a 17-8 advantage with 5:14 left in the first half.
But Paul, an Illinois recruit, was not to be outdone. Just like he did last Friday against Lake
Zurich, Paul took Warren (22-5) on his shoulders as the Blue Devils rallied to
tie the game at the half at 23-23. Paul scored 18 of Warren's 23.
With Paul demanding Lake Forest's complete attention, the game opened up for Jake Anderson (10 points, 10 rebounds) and James Poliquin (nine points, seven rebounds). With Warren leading 37-33 with 1:05 left in the third quarter, they helped spark a 13-2 run as the Blue Devils blew the game open and took a commanding 50-35 lead.
Vogrich led Lake Forest with 17 points and 10 rebounds but was only 7-for-21 from the field. Mitch Hopfinger added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Scouts.
